Monica Orosz
Daily Mail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Jennifer Miller last week embarked on a project that’s both thrilling and a bit scary: She publicly asked for money.

Miller, owner of Mission Savvy on Hale Street, is using the national crowd-funding website Kickstarter (www.kickstarter.com) to try to raise $8,000 for Organic To-Go, a food truck that will serve organic, gluten-free and vegan foods around the region during concerts and other events.

As Kickstarter recommends, Miller has set up a 30-day window for raising the money. It’s an all-or-nothing proposition: If she doesn’t raise the full amount, no money changes hands. On the other hand, if she raises more than her goal, she gets to keep it – less administrative fees of 5 percent to 8 percent charged by both Kickstarter partners and by amazon.com, which serves as a collection vehicle for donors.

“It’s nerve racking for somebody like me to put the course of something in somebody else’s hands,” Miller acknowledged. “It puts you in a really vulnerable place.”

Yet Miller, who has her hands busy running her eco boutique and organic food store with her mom, Sally, also heard good things about Kickstarter and its successes.

Begun in 2009, Kickstarter’s motto is “A New Way to Fund & Follow Creativity.” The premise is that a good idea, properly communicated, can spread far and wide. Its emphasis is on creative endeavors such as film, art, music, design, writing and performing. It’s not for someone who is raising money for charity, someone who has a hard luck tale to tell or someone who is just starting a business.

The project must be approved before it can be launched.

Miller hopes she will secure funding from local supporters but also from like-minded folks around the country who simply agree with her idea for healthy food.

Projects are grassroots, but there’s always the hope the cause will go viral.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Hi there dreamers, friends, innovators, and sources of inspiration!! Welcome to Mission Savvy’s Kickstarter project: “Organic To-Go”. I hope you are having a great day; let me tell you all about this fun new adventure of ours….

I’m Jennifer Miller, founder of Mission Savvy and idealist behind an organic food-to-go trailer in small town West Virginia (oh but wait, don’t click on the link quite yet stay and read this first!)

Our menu will include:
(organic, gluten-free, vegan)

Veggie Dogs with gourmet toppings

Indonesian marinated tofu satays

Garden fresh springs rolls with almond dipping sauce (raw)

Baked tempeh chips with spicy tamari sauce

Homemade vegan ice cream topped with fresh fruit (raw)

This concept is a pop-up extension of what Mission Savvy currently is: an ethical lifestyle boutique and grocery in downtown Charleston, WV. We offer meals to-go inside the boutique that are organic, vegan, and raw (created by Chef Riswanto, Living Light Institute certified) as well as eco clothing, homegoods and lifestyle products.

I believe healthy food should be at our finger tips where ever we are at all times. When Mission Savvy rolls up, you will now have a choice to treat your bodies better and enjoy amazing cuisine at the same time!

LET’S DO IT.

“Organic To-Go” will travel to events all over West Virginia (yes, please send me your suggestions!) with a focus on downtown Charleston happenings. Watch out deep fried oreos, here comes the new generation of fast-food indulgences.

Here is what funding will help with:

Purchase of a trailer or small truck to be outfitted per health department standards

3-bowl washing station and hand washing sink

Cooler

Gas tank

Water tank and waste water tank

Materials for outfitting: shelves, paint, table tops

And finally, because we here at Mission Savvy are so excited about this we want to give you the best rewards possible for supporting “Organic To-Go”! So, we’ve lined up some pretty amazing, one of kind goodies.

IMPORTANT: If you would like to contribute $100 or more and do not live in WV to use the free food tickets or cannot attend the launch party, please let us know.

Follow Mission Savvy on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionSavvy

…. and follow our journey here: http://missionsavvy.com/blog/

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you are the organic seedlings in the harvest of big dreams ♥

Jennifer Miller’s Hale Street store stocks fashionable clothing from small designers who use eco-friendly materials and promise to pay fair wages to their workers.

Yet as Jennifer Miller ponders her next step with her business, which includes plans to expand this year, she says her real goal isn’t to be a retailer, but to be an animal advocate. In preparation of expanding, Miller is offering a 50 percent off sale on all clothing through Feb. 27.

“The clothing part of it is such a small part of my day,” she said, although she has become a passionate advocate of fair labor practices, particularly in countries that permit child labor.

Rather, Jennifer opened the business as a way to raise money for animal welfare and conservation groups. A portion of her profits goes to organizations that support her causes: rescuing animals used for entertainment, animal neglect, animals used for invasive research, protecting wildlife in its natural habitat and rescuing animals from inhumane farming practices.
