by Monica Orosz

Jennifer Miller’s Hale Street store stocks fashionable clothing from small designers who use eco-friendly materials and promise to pay fair wages to their workers.

Yet as Jennifer Miller ponders her next step with her business, which includes plans to expand this year, she says her real goal isn’t to be a retailer, but to be an animal advocate. In preparation of expanding, Miller is offering a 50 percent off sale on all clothing through Feb. 27.

“The clothing part of it is such a small part of my day,” she said, although she has become a passionate advocate of fair labor practices, particularly in countries that permit child labor.

Rather, Jennifer opened the business as a way to raise money for animal welfare and conservation groups. A portion of her profits goes to organizations that support her causes: rescuing animals used for entertainment, animal neglect, animals used for invasive research, protecting wildlife in its natural habitat and rescuing animals from inhumane farming practices.

THEY NEED TO HERE FROM YOU PLEASE CALL!!!

Over 45,000 animals were killed in WV shelters in 2009 and this number could be reduced (which would save taxpayers money) if more pets were spayed and neutered. This bill passed the Senate overwhelmingly in 2010 and this is basically the same bill you voted for then. Please do so again. Thank you. ~ Betty Burkett. Federation of Humane Organizations

Here are the email addresses for the Senators. Keep your request for support short and personal, something like “Please support this bill as it will save many animals lives by reducing animal overpopulation.” You can always leave a message with the Senators assistant/secretary as well.

Two weeks ago I announced that Lucas Farm and I would be going to a live slaughter auction to save a horse. Within four days we raised enough funds to make this happen. Thank you!!!

Thanks to everyone’s help we rescued this sweet Percheron Mare bound for Sugarcreek Meat Auction, one of the six largest kill auctions in the United States.

Percheron Mare Rescued at Catlettsburg, KY Auction

The Catlettsburg auction in Kentucky is owned and run by a kill buyer. Horse owners bring their unwanted horses there hoping to make on average $100 per animal. Why would they want to sell their horse? And why are they in ownership of unwanted horses? The answers are part of a larger discussion around irresponsible breeding for show and sport that have resulted in an overpopulation of unwanted horses.

The Catlettsburg auction is one of the ugliest places I’ve been, a cesspool for disease and abusive behavior. I can not explain how difficult it was to leave with only one animal. And there weren’t just horses there:

Unwanted calf, destination unknown.

The operators of the auction corralled each animal into a tight pen and then rode it into the ring, most of the time bare back no matter how terrified the animals were of being ridden.

The USDA’s solution to horse overpopulation in the United States is slaughter. This is why the ban was lifted by Congress in December 2011. This is an unrealistic solution when there is no regulation in place for ownership and breeding. Preventative measures need to be paired with sustainable solutions for any change to happen. Please sign the petition to end horse slaughter.

Thank you for all your help, we aren’t giving up, if anything we are gaining momentum!!

There’s no uglier fate for a horse than to end up at a live auction swarming with meat buyers.

Credit: Tinia Lucas Creamer / Lucas Farm

Auctions fulfill a market niche for horse owners and buyers who only see a profit horses can turn for their wallet. They don’t see emotional, intelligent, caring souls who if they could would ask why are they being treated with such hatred. These animals lives should not end so soon at slaughter nor do they deserve one second under ownership of an ignorant human “caretaker” who has no interest in the long term physical and emotional well being of these animals.

I don’t know about you, but I strongly believe that it is not our privilege to bring animals into this world only to abuse them for entertainment and eat them in the end. This is NOT man’s evolutionary course, this is a culture created by selfish breeds, out of touch with man’s true place in nature.

Credit: Tinia Lucas Creamer / Lucas Farm - all photos need to be taken discretely and unoticed.

Catlettsburg Horse Auction in Kentucky is one example of a meat market, held at 10pm, just feet from an operating railroad track, a hell on earth for horses crammed in holding pens, ridden bareback and pranced around like objects for sale until someone claims them – 80% of the time by meat buyers. When horses are purchased for meat they are penned off to the side before being loaded up for a long journey to Mexico or Canada for slaughter.

My good friend Tinia Lucas Creamer, owner and operator of Lucas Farm in Huntington, WV and beautiful spirit behind a number of regional horse rescues is embarking on a second trip to this auction and I plan to go with her. (Read her report on the auction HERE.)

To walk away with a horse we need to raise $500 before we can even show up – this will cover initial purchase, farrier exam and vet exam for the horse we rescue. I stress, we CANNOT go unless we have raised enough funds to get a horse out of there and we only have 1 week to do so. PLEASE if you can donate send a check to Mission Savvy at:

202 Hale St.
Charleston, WV 25301

….or you can also send a donation via PayPal to missionsavvy@gmail.com. Walk in donations are more than welcomed as well!

Please help us save a life. There’s no second chances for these animals, this is the last stop before slaughter.

Credit: Tinia Lucas Creamer / Lucas Farm "...they brought the group of scared colts and fillies these people had not handled or fed through and sold them for as little as $10 a piece, their feet never trimmed, having never known affection and their ribs visible from any distance."

I get so many inquiries about the “mystery” chef behind Mission Savvy’s Organic Food To-Go menu - all vegan, gluten-free and raw gourmet collection of goodess. Is he local, does he cater, does he teach, what on earth is coconut ceviche and WHERE IS HE?

Well today I am granting myself full disclosure privileges to discuss chef Indra Riswanto (oooooops there’s his name!!!!), a natural culinary artist who strolls in after hours plugged into music to sprout, soak, marinade, blend and julienne the boringness out of the average looking edible plant – the end result being beautiful, almost incomprehensible meals to the average American. He’s been known to ride up to the store on his bike, casually mix in with my customers and never mention that he is the chef, escaping unrecognized.

Well here’s what I know about Indra: he grew up in a small town in North Sumatra, Indonesia, the oldest in a family of six, was raised on fresh mango, pineapple, cocoa, jackfruit and papaya while I was simultaneously raised in the U.S. on Snickers, Fritos, pizza and instant mashed potatoes.

Fruit Salad creation at the Jungle Inn

Indonesia’s culture is naturally appreciative of a healthy diet and his career began 3 hours down a beat-up road in a village called Bukit Lawang – an area that caters to tourists traveling to see the endangered orangutan up and close.

When not occupied with whipping up the largest (seriously gargantuan) fruit salad you have ever seen in your life, he part-timed in the forest guiding tourists through the jungle searching for gibbons, macaques, hornbills, tigers and of course the orangutan.

In 2004 Indra left the jungle for the U.S. and worked for a number of high end restaurants as well as casual cafes. Several year in he decided to further his qualification as a chef and entered California’s Living Light Institute in 2009 – the leading institution for Raw and Living Food Culinary Arts.

A cross country trip following graduation with a journal capturing inspirations from some of the best raw vegan cafes in American led Indra to the mountains of West Virginia where he opened his own personal chef business in partnership with local holistic nutrition company, Eats of Eden.

And this is where I snatched him up for Mission Savvy!!! What a better compliment to our ethical lifestyle concept then healthy food, right?

So that’s our amazing Indra in a nutshell. Fan clubs seeking an in-the-flesh run in should check Hale St.’s alley at around 10pm on Wednesday nights
